After several posts on this issue, the conclusion seems to be that any “mistakes” regarding the taxation of bullion on eBay are the seller’s. eBay will not apply taxes to the item if the seller has listed it in the appropriate category.
Keep in mind that you can still bail out of the sale at checkout if you feel that a tax charge for your purchase is inappropriate.
