Ebay International Shipping. Total rip off scam!

Get your act together Ebay gouging people for shipping and limiting people from any sales cross border..
I purchase postage stamps on a regular basis from all over the world; Every country besides the United States the users / sellers are using reasonable shipping methods which often include tracking.. I typically pay between 3.00 and 5.00 maybe 7.00 maximum if the letter is being tracked... These letters have no weight and between Canada and the USA standard shipping charged are 2.50$

For some stupid reason Ebay USA and Canada aren't able to work in sync without us being gouged as the buyers and the sellers have less buyers because of the ridiculous charged behing Ebay International Shipping.. On the sellers end they do not realize that Ebay is charging us the seller 17.80$ to send a stamp... A single stamp...

This is a constant issue between US and Cad and Ebay doesn't seem to give a hoot to make things a little more clear or justify their ridiculous pricing... Not the first time but today I won a stamp worth 3.50... The add stated standard USPS shipping of 0.99 on the lot... I win the auction; Go to my cart and BOOM slammed with Ebay International Shipping which added 17.80 USD on top of 3.50... My total came to be 27.00 Cad$... For one stamp...

Total idiots run this platform and they do nothing at all to update the system to make things clear! It is a constant back and fourth messaging sellers to figure out shipping costs and the sellers I speak to don't even realize we the buyers are being charged so much... Many change shipping methods once they are notified of the charges Ebay is throwing at us....

There are no customs and duty on a 3.50 stamp Ebay... You scammers! It doesn't cost you 17.80 USD to send me a single postage stamp... Absolute trash.. Had to cancel at least a dozen orders now over the years because of this garbage scam Ebay keeps on pushing...

Get your developers to get up off their rear ends and put a fix to this! All you need to do is Google "Ebay international shipping scam or rip off" to see dozens of people who've compalined about this over the years

Are you kidding me? Saying Canada doesn't have enough people to offer sales frequently enough to American sellers?

The United States has over eight times as many people as Canada does. Most US sellers who only ship within the US can make a decent go of it on eBay. That means a US eBay seller adding Canada as a ships-to location potentially increases their market size by about 12 percent. They’re unlikely to increase their eBay sales by 12 percent, though, for various reasons including additional shipping costs (for larger items), many Canadians shying away from purchasing anything American in the current political climate, and the simple fact that the math doesn’t work that way.

Canadian eBayers need American eBayers more than American eBayers need Canadian eBayers.  Do what I did a number of years ago and go to the .com boards and ask sellers what proportion of their eBay sales are to Canada if you're having trouble accepting this.

Sounds like ANOTHER BULL$HIT AMERICAN LAW because the rest of the world doesn't do it like that there buddy... I get dozens of letters per month from all over the globe sending the letters to me at fair prices!

It’s just a matter of time until Universal Postal Union regulations are more rigorously enforced. Canadian sellers of items such as trading cards were already seeing many of their international shipments returned even before Trump was elected to a second term.

Lots of people drive faster than the posted speed through school zones without anyone taking notice. It doesn’t mean they’re driving properly, though.

Customs is very rarely going to go out of its way to do this... I grew up in Germany and brought collections over the Canada... No duty was paid.. I  purchase stamps from all over the world every single week as old as 1841 and no duty has been paid.. I buy entire albums from Poland for 30 - 40$ shipping which comes with tracking and no duty is ever paid..

But when I order a stamp from the US or get an offer like I did a few minutes ago.. Stamp 5.00 and another worth 6.00 EACH ONE asking 16.88 shipping on top? Only in the USA and only because they use that garbage called Ebay International shipping that no other country out there is using.... There is no justification for it!

All you need to do is type " Ebay international shipping program rip off" in to Google... An entire AI generated thread exists which mentions how many users feel it to be a scam and rip off...

Then look at Reddit and the hundreds of posts talking about the Ebay int shipping scam and rip off...

Then look at this forum and see how many people have also had issues with it!

Ebay is a greedy company that's what it is... They made 10 billion in profit in 2024 and that's probably in large part from this scam they call a shipping program! When I send a letter to Flordia from Ontario is it a flat 2.50 rate.... If I get Ebay to do it for me they think it's justified to charge 6 x more to take longer and not allow me to combine shipping....

Trash.. All around trash

Re: Charging duty.

Charging duty is entirely up to the discretion of the receiving countries customs folks based on a local governments decisions. When stuff arrived (in the past) from USA via USPS/CP in many cases they used the motto...can't be bothered. I've had 50 dollar orders where it was charged and 100 dollar orders where it wasn't charged. Entirely hit or miss. Same goes for shipping to USA and Germany. Buyers reported back to me. Everything has had more of a wrench thrown into the schmozzle because of the Trump factor. We can only imagine how much customs officials on both sides of the border have been pulling out their hair with all these hourly changes. Not helped with the removal of deminimus in some cases to USA and low limit for shipments to Canada.

What makes it more painful from a Canadian's perspective, is to the casual eye it (eIS) appears to be more of a eBay money maker vs a value added service that it could be, because of volume being done at a more economical cost. But only my 2 cents on the subject. A 1 line formal entry is not that much of a time consuming task to complete. (In the past it was all done as an informal entry while goods were on the move with customs brokers not required. No longer the case. Formal entry is more hands on.)

Another day another Ebay International shipping rip off.. A stamp being auctioned off at 6.00 with 0 bidders is asking 25.80 shipping and lives less than a 5 hour drive from my current location... What a gong show using this platform... **bleep** kind of logic is this?

Do you understand how eIS works? I’m not crazy about the system either but I took the time to figure out the basics about how and why it works the way it does and I appreciate that while it can be slow and inefficient and doesn't work well for certain items, it's not out to fleece buyers.

Is the $25.80 charge you’re mentioning in US dollars or Canadian dollars? If it’s in US dollars, then roughly a third of it is the seller’s own charge for shipping the stamp to the eIS forwarding hub. And the seller will have to send it by a trackable shipping method, which is more expensive than traditional letter mail.

Understanding the workings of eIS doesn’t mean you’re going to like the system. It just means you’ll have some appreciation for why it works the way it does. Knowledge is power and much better for your blood pressure.

Don't forget that you can use a US address to have your purchases sent to and either pick them up or have them forwarded from there. Unfortunately, you'll forego a lot of your buyer protections in the process.

All the US sellers shipping with the (expensive) eIS tracked system and reporting value for import fees are obeying international laws.

The ones shipping by letterpost with no customs declaration are  breaking the law.

Someone who will cheat on taxes will cheat you.

Breaking what law? You think there are going to be customs on 10$ worth of used postage stamps? So basically the entire world then is breaking the law? Japan, Germany, France, Australia etc etc by sending me standard mail?

You know what a letter is right? It is a thing you put paper inside of and then send it to a given address.. You know I am not sending car parts right? I'm not exactly sending heavy weight here or any product that has required duty... I ordered POSTAGE STAMPS THAT ARE USED and have already been canceled!

EVERY COUNTRY ON THIS PLANET EXCEPT THE UNITED STATES CAN SHIP LETTERS OUT AFFORDABLY! I am sorry you think this is about obeying the law and not using common sense because a **bleep** cancelled used postage stamp does not have DUTY FEES!

I order FULL ALBUMBS FROM POLAND AND GERMANY with no duty fees.... You think 1 postage stamp from Boston to Toronto is worthy of charging like the order today wanted 28.00??? For ONE stamp?
Is that how I can satisfy the law? By paying 6x more in shipping costs than the acutal value of the item?
How stupid is this world getting? Is there any common sense or logic left?

According to you NewYorkStamps one of the most active and busiest sellers of HIGH END HIGH CV stamps who ships them out at 2.00 - 4.00 is BREAKING THE LAW! He should be using Ebay international shipping right? So they can add another 24.00 on to that total based on nothing at all?
Or the dozens of other high value collectors from the US who sell at reasonable prices? All breaking the law? They can't go to a post office once per week and mail out a bunch of items? They need to send it to Ebay so that it can scam its share of profit first?

You kidding me man? People have been sending postage without duty for almost 200 years now..

Japan to Ontario - 2.00
Germany to Ontario 2.00
France to Ontario - 2.50
GB to Ontario - 3.00
Australia to Cad - 2.50

These are postage fees! You purchase a postage stamp... You put the letter in an envelope and you send it out! People do it every single day... There is no justification at all for charging 28.00 shipping on a stamp worth 6.00..... I don't care how you slice it... What are the duty on a used postage stamp from 1890? Is there a guideline and list they use?

Why are you making excuses to justify their scam program?

They will will they? Is that why I have messages going back and fourth as they ask me to look at their add again to tell me if costs have changed? Is that why they constantly say they didn't realize the cost was so high and it is no wonder nobody was bidding?
What rules? This falls on EBAY IN THE UNITED STATES being poorly set up for sellers! It isn't clear and does not provide the rates that we see on our end!

I spent 3 days with a seller recently as we went back and fourth... Me sending him screenshots of my end and how I seen the pricing vs what we was trying to put out there...  He and other sellers even had to call Ebay support for help and they weren't able to help this guy change his prices! He ended up shipping it for free to me for the hassle when I didn't even ask him to....

I ORDERERED probably close to 1000 lots this year... I pay shipping from every corner of this world and know how the system SHOULD WORK! I also send stamps out to Americans and the cost of the stamp from here to there is 2.50! There is no excuse for this nonsense and I don't get why you would even attempt to defend this utter scam!

It isn't that simple and most US sellers are not even realizing the shipping costs we are seeing which then leaves them with no bidders on their items! Like the Jubilee stamp I was watching today.... 6.00 for the item - 28.00 shipping ended up with no buyers! It would sell all day long at the prices other sellers are selling it for!

EBAY INTERNATIONAL IS A **bleep**ING SCAM

PREMIUM TRACKED SHIPPING
Ontario to Boston at the post office if 3.50....

That is priority shipping! That is me going to the post office saying please send this out to so and so location... That is what shipping costs of a LETTER than weigh nothing are...

I think it's pretty sad you are here standing up for this scam company charging people 28.00 to mail a single postage stamp and if you order more than 1 stamp from the seller Ebay won't even let you combine shipping... You need to wait for a refund in 3 days from that seller!

How on earth do you think that's normal? Look up Ebay profit in 2024 and tell me those clowns can't come up with something a little more clear for sellers in the United States? How the hell are 80% US sellers bound to this garbage while the rest of the world isn't? They don't like going to the local post office?

What the hell world do I live in? Every single town has a post office Are these people just too stupid to go to a post office and ship things out in a fair way? The rest of the world can? What's happening in USA?....
Nothing but a stain of a country... In every aspect... Nothing but a for profit cespoll of no common sense or logic

Why are US sellers oging back and fourth in my inbox saying things like "Oh I didn't even realize shipping costs were so high" Or, " Can you look at my add again, I changed prices but can you tell me what you see."
Or us both calling support to try to figure out combined shipping or combined invoices... Nope... Cancel the order... Have to pay Ebay Int Shipping on each individual stamp I order.... So 3 stamps - 18.00 + 80.00 shipping cad! So that in 3-5 business days the seller can refund me part of that shipping cost! Such a great system!

Again the entire rest of the **bleep**ing world can do it right... Not the USA though?

And, you'll have to go to the US to pick the purchases up. Not a happy thought with the current POTAS calling the shots. You might not be allowed back into Canada, or you might be deported to some country on the other side of the ocean.

If you don't want to deal with Americans, or you can't handle the huge cost to ship something, then Buy Canadian.

Simple, yes?

With all due respect ...

I admire you for your knowledge and success on eBay - your posts are always highly educational.

I think the problem you are having is not with eBay. Technically, including something other than a letter, or similar,  with the letter in the same envelope is against postal regulations, therefore, illegal. At least, according to what I am reading here.

The fact that you, I, and millions of other people, including law makers, and post office officials do this horrible, life-threatening, disease carrying disregard of the 'law everyday doesn't make it legal, but it doesn't appear to be a law that is enforced with any vigor.

Duty and taxes are related to the laws of the Country, and are not eBay's fault. If you don't like them, call your local political guy and whine.

Whoa Lightning!

I'm just paraphrasing what I seeing here ... that it's illegal to include anything, valuable or not, with a letter/written material in the same envelope - in their minds you are beating the system by sneaking something in using only standard letter postage.

Back in the day, people used to send cash or money order through the mail to pay for eBay purchases, before eBay figured out a way to take a bigger piece from their sellers.

Was this technically illegal? I don't know if it was then or if it is now, and I really don't give a rat's $#&

I've been frequently astounded how many people seem unable to figure out how to send a package internationally.  "I don't know how to ship out of the USA".  "It's too complicated".  This in a hobby community... one person who has shipped me things has had a near meltdown at ALL THE FORMS she had to fill out.  Like, in quintuplicate.  And list EVERY SINGLE ITEM on it and because there were a lot of small items and she had to list EVERY ONE it took THREE WHOLE FORMS, in multiple, to list everything.  And it took an hour at the post office.... and so on....  (It was something she chose to send and not something I asked for, and she still had the meltdown, LOL.)

So it does seem that they have a lot more forms than we do -- and did before recent, um, changes -- but I still always think "why can't you just take that to the post office?"  I too have seen ridiculous costs for "things that could go in a letter" so I feel ya on the cost of shipping just a stamp -- that sounds nuts.  I'd definitely be shopping elsewhere.

I agree, @3islanders. The impression I have from reading the .com discussion boards is that process of directly mailing merchandise internationally from the US has become a lot more complex for the average person in the past few years.

The last thing I bought from the USA was a dress (shopzuri.com) made in Kenya, shipped from NYC.

The label on the package was no longer nor more complicated than our own.

The only other paperwork was a notice about return policies inside the package.
