COO on Coins - Interesting response from Chat GPT

We had this discussion a few months ago about where coins are Minted (and how the Royal Canadian Mint, for example, makes coins from 70 different countries). This could apply to banknotes, De la Rue in the UK makes a lot of world banknotes.

I asked Chat GPT about COO, and got this answer. What do you think? Stallion asks for the manufacturer, not the place it came from, from Stallion's portal it looks like they want the Mint and country it was Minted in as the manufacturer, not the government authority that requested the coins to be minted.

Are people really getting so dependant on ChatGPT? It's the new urban legend channel, since you need to search on your own anyway to verify what you get as a reply...

Harkens back to when for the longest time the auto-magically default for their field for Country of Origin to ca/province. There was no way to over-ride what displayed when it printed. Eventually that fixed but took awhile. That application/version is more intended for manufacturers when they filled out a Certificate of Origin.

In theory if country of origin is filled in in a listing when it was created that info "should" be ported to eBay labels and then would be up to sender to correct if it was not accurate. It does that for measurements and address info.

The "country of origin" for a manufactured product is the country where it was substantially transformed into its final form, or where the last substantial manufacturing process took place. It's not necessarily the country from which it was shipped or where materials were sourced, but rather the place where the product acquired its essential character

Determining Country of Origin:
  • Wholly Obtained or Produced:
If a product is entirely grown, produced, or manufactured in a single country, that country is the origin.

  • ^^^^^Substantial Transformation:^^^^^
If a product is made from materials originating in multiple countries, the country where the last substantial transformation occurs is considered the country of origin. This transformation could involve a significant change in the product's form, function, or use.

  • Examples:
    • A shirt made with fabric from one country, but cut, sewn, and assembled in another, may have a country of origin based on where the assembly took place.

    • A food product made with ingredients from various countries may have a country of origin based on where it was processed and packaged.

Importance of Knowing Country of Origin:
  • Trade Agreements:
Understanding the country of origin is crucial for determining if a product qualifies for preferential treatment under free trade agreements.

  • Customs and Duties:
Customs authorities use the country of origin to assess tariffs and ensure compliance with import regulations.

  • Consumer Information:
Consumers often want to know where products are made for various reasons, including supporting local businesses, quality perception, and ethical considerations.

  • Branding and Marketing:
Country of origin can be a significant factor in branding and marketing strategies.

In the context of Canada:
  • Canada has specific regulations for marking the country of origin on imported goods.

  • The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) provides guidance on determining and marking the country of origin.

  • There are also specific rules for determining the origin of goods under various free trade agreements like CUSMA (formerly NAFTA) and CETA.

  • The CBSA offers National Customs Rulings to help importers, exporters, and producers clarify the origin of goods.

At this point in time and for the forseeable future using Chat GPT is taking your life in your own hands for this IMPORTANT function. At least with google search you can confirm by checking multiple sources for the most accurate info required and using your own judgement as to what to use.

@fh991586  Very true. Changing a minor word has the potential to give varying results. It would like asking DT what he plans to mess with....several times in the same day.

Important note: See Substantial transformation above. How the system was originally designed to work and be applied.
