Oooo stamp sellers, got a tariff surprise today!

Nice way to start Monday morning, discovered that there is at least one country who's stamps are tariffed, RUSSIA. Tariff rate is 35% which turned into a $20 surprise.

At least now I know how the process works for Zonos prepay when there's a tariff, it's not too bad you just pay via credit card (or can set up to pull from bank account). Just hoping the PM doesn't make a mistake and the zonos has to be redone - I'm assuming in that case when it is voided, assuming it is if there's problems, and  it eventually gets refunded - hopefully won't have experience in that regard!

Already updated all my Russia lots with shipping costs to the US including the tariff now, that'll stop them from buying them I'm sure, not minding that.

Stamps only seem to be tariff free with Canada Post/ Zonos.

I've been shipping by Stallion and on code 9704 I've had to pay tariff on all stamps I shipped.

The code that does not have tariff with Stallion is 4907 (but for me that's used for shipping banknotes).

I've wondered if the "problem" with the likes of Stallion is they're covering their butts and forcing it on more than is necessary - ie one could liberally interpret 9704.00.0000 and their problem is if something is caught they're accountable (and potentially fined) and it delays a large number of other peoples shipments so they aren't taking a chance. Could be wrong though.

The potential for tariffs on more stuff makes "where do I list" decisions difficult for me as I've still got about 50% of my stuff on .COM. The .COM folks tend to buy .COM only, unless they've become regular customers. At this point generally I'm listing virtually everything on .CA until things settle out, assuming they ever do.....

If Customs determines there's no tariffs or more or less tariffs, they will adjust my account. So far no adjustments relating to stamp shipments. I think it's some weird rule that the stamps have to be "imported by mail" and Stallion's service doesn't qualify for being tariff free on stamps.

I have lots of listings on dot com (like over 9000 listings). I'm putting the less expensive and higher tariff items on dot ca for Canadian customers. I don't have so many Canadian customers, but today when I shipped packages I had 10 Canada Post packages and only 2 for Stallion. (The Canada Post packages were for shipping within Canada, I use Stallion for my US and international stuff).

I'm at my store's limit on non stamp items with 1000 coins, tokens and banknotes. I've been replacing items in my store as things have sold to keep it at 1000 items, but I'm thinking of expanding that store since I have lots to list. It's just not a priority. Also I can list all my stamps because they allow 10,000 stamp listings in my Canadian store, and I definitely don't have 10,000 stamps in inventory to list.

Ummm- do you mean US Customs or CBSA?

When you say "they" do you mean Zonos?

The benefit of eIS is that the US buyer pays all tariffs (and other import fees) before we are told to ship.

If US Customs determines I paid too much or too little in tariffs, Stallion will debit or credit my account when the amount Stallion pays CBP for my package is adjusted.

So the Canadian seller pays the US buyers tax/tariff/duty?

Not this Canadian.

It's part of the shipping and handling, or as a result of increased prices.

The logistics of me paying it are just the order of events. If I shipped with Zonos I'd still be paying it. It's up to me to price my stuff appropriately to collect that from the buyer.

I only ate (paid) this one because I of course didn't suspect there were any tariffs. CP/Zonos to this point was always zero, and I'm treating it like a customer service scenario as well as a learning experience for me of course.

I immediately changed all my Russian lots US shipping costs to cover the tariff for Americans. Everyone else pays the same as they did before.

Hopefully no surprises for any countries that I have a lot of items for sale....

After you posted there was a 35% tariff I went to Stallion Express' website to see what they charge for 9704, and they're saying "10%" as recipricol IEEPA tariffs.

If Stallion is an option for you, maybe use that for your Russian stamps (or any other stamps you're hit with tariffs on).

I signed up for Zonos tonight to try and get some 9704 stuff in tariff free (once I found out that Tracked Packet USA with my Canada Post discount is similar to what I pay with Stallion on lightweight items).

That's interesting, it also makes me wonder if stallions just using the 10% for all Canadian stuff regardless where sourced??

I noticed when it created the invoice it had the word "penalty" in it. Since it's the first time I've ever seen anything to do with tariffs, I assumed that was the normal wording??

With Stallion, if your stuff is Canadian it's 35% tariff, but if you fill out a form for CUSMA certification, then it's tariff free. I have CUSMA certifications on all my coins minted in Canada.

Not sure what you mean about the invoice having the word penalty, is that an eBay invoice? I haven't seen that.

The Zonos prepay app had this under the duty explanation: "US Column 2 Penalty Rates (Russian origin goods)"  and it was a 35% rate.

Just to see, I went back just now and re-tried Russian stamps of same value:

-only one item $40 value   ZERO tariff

-the 2nd of 2 items, same as it was when I had the duty ZERO tariff

So now I'm thinking this was a glitch. On the day of the problem, I tried leaving zonos after the first non zero response and did them all again, it came up with the tariff, I also tried another time with just Russia by itself it came up with the tariff as well.

So I guess now I'll have to go back and fix all the shippings on the Russian lots back to what they were before for the US folks...... sigh...... I did think that I'd sold Russian stuff before with zero tariff so I bet I did.
