Found an additional charge on a shipping label — has anyone disputed this with Canada Post?

After a seven month hiatus because of the Canada Post strike, I started selling again and have been running into new things every day. 😂

This time, I found an additional charge on the same shipping label in All activity which makes 2 charges on one shipping label. It’s not a lot, but this is the first time I’ve seen this happen in years of selling.

I contacted eBay, and they said canada post can notify ebay and apply an adjustment if they decide the package dimensions and weight were entered incorrectly. That’s completely new to me. I might have measured it wrong this time since this was my very first time shipping clothing in a plastic mailer - I pushed the air out when measuring, but I always enter the weight and dimensions a little bit bigger than the actual package just to be safe.

Ebay told me that I can dispute the charge with canada post and get a credit if I win. So my question is, has anyone here actually disputed a charge with canada post and won? How long did it take? Thanks in advance.

Was this for a new sale, or something you found looking back at months old transactions?

You pushed the air out and by the time it reached the Canada Post scanners it had reflated itself.

I do not know with certainty this is what happened but it is definitely possible.

Hello, this happened to me once before and the explaination at the time from eBay was that the extra shipping charge was due to volumeric dimensions.  The clothing insde the bubble mailer had shifted so that once side of the package was thicker than the other side which altered the dimensions of the package and increased the shipping cost.   Since then I only ship clothing in boxes and have not had the same problem again.

Although many many years ago I gave thought to shipping my hand knit items in poly mailers, opted for the safer method of using boxes and nary a problem, never any after the fact postal charges...and they don't make boxes like they used to either, so I measure all boxes across several different spots to get the most accurate dimensions...

At the counter I routinely see clerks measure in sort of a random way. Not always parallel to sides...basically at an angle. If its done by laser at a plant it would be the largest measurement it calculates. Mostly why I have never been a fan of poly mailers. Open to toooo much to interpretation when it comes to measuring. I routinely decrease packaging to make as small as possible but still to keep item safe for transit. Another observation made daily. Clerks selling inappropriate box sizes for what sender has to ship. Often they could go down 1 or 2 sizes and item would still be protected for shipping. Most things I send letter are either in a bubble mailer, modified to make smaller when possible (so less fears of cubing getting applied for exp. lite) or cb mailers where bending is a bad thing.

If ebay is going to continually charge at a later date maybe they should be including the date label was created with the date charged so less back and forth would be required.

As for granular rates (ebay's new postage model) this is what comes up as a definition.

Granular shipping rates refer to a highly detailed pricing model where shipping costs are broken down and determined by specific, itemized factors of each shipment, rather than a simple flat rate or broad tier. This method ensures the shipping cost accurately reflects the exact resources used.

Something we have been asking for years...the itemized factors like they show when you attempt a quote using the CP tool. Which leads to getting those nasty revised undetailed bonus charges with zippo for explanations as to the why.

Maybe we need clarification(credits) as to why the tax(s) on postage is being charged twice to buyers and the FVF fees are getting charged to this new out of whack total the buyer sees. (Screen shots on the subject were sent previously to another discussion.) Pretty sure double taxing is a bad business practice.

A successful dispute with Canada Post would be simple.

You would contact Canada Post, they spin a wheel and if it's your lucky day they will give you a refund cheque.

If it's still your lucky day they will send the cheque to you and not one of your buyers (like they did mine).

More likely to happen is Canada Post will tell you to contact ebay, because you bought the label through ebay.

You might encounter a helpful agent that can confirm the measurements Canada Post auditing system has for the package, and see how off it is from your measurements at least.

It depends if getting nothing in the end is worth the effort to you.  If you do try to contact Canada Post, please reply later with how it went.
