Since Aug 29, have you sold anything?

Since Aug 29, have you sold anything?  I was on time away for a few days but back on now for a couple of days and nothing, no Canadian or US sales.

How about you?

Currently not listing on eBay...will let all the tariff guinea pigs have their day with their various shipping methods to USA ...I am busy listing items on my other selling site, where I have a much better chance of selling something within Canada...

Definite dive in sales, no question.  Might be an idea to put in the title ("Duty paid by seller for Postal shipments") but I'd be careful with that when it comes to how much duty is being assessed when the item is out of your hands.  As for other sites, there are sites in Canada dedicated to sales of specific kinds of items, as well as Facebook Marketplace which is probably the biggest sales site in the U.S. now.

I came in here a minute ago to start a similar thread... I've been back online for a little over 24 hours now and had some sales. (I was away, then sick with the flu or some other such thing, so I only turned my stores on yesterday).

On the Canada store (this one), I sold one banknote to a buyer in Ottawa, and one token to a buyer in Quebec. USA sales are mostly blocked in this store though, so that might not be a fair representation (but USA sales are not blocked on some specific things that I don't feel I'll have problems shipping to the US).

On my US store, I sold a token to a customer in the US (he contacted me before Aug 29 so we had a conversation about tariffs and how I ship with Stallion and all that, which reassured him to purchase when the store reopened).

Also sold a token to a buyer in Malaysia, a $3 banknote to a buyer in the US, and a stamped cover to a buyer in the US. The stamped cover buyer contacted me in advance to make an offer where I responded how I ship (no tariffs for the buyer).

Since it seems like sellers have the choice to do DDP with Canada Post (or Stallion/Chit Chats) or DDU with UPS/FedEx I wanted to assure my buyers about shipping with Stallion and that takes care of the tariffs. I raised my shipping prices in the US store to deal with small amounts of tariffs on low value things (so the buyer pays as part of their shipping if in the US, not affecting the price for non-US buyers), and I removed anything with high rates where there would be no profits.

I have some 1200 items to go through my unsolds and figure out what to do (the postcards will be lotted up and sold in groups in the brick and mortar store, the tokens will be rephotographed and listed on this store on eBay.ca, and other items will be returned to the brick and mortar store for them to decide what to do with).

I've thought of updating verbage, but updating listings is a pain in the rear every time it gets done. I've had to update many times for changes that were made (like when my listings said Paypal and then MP came about and I had to remove the Paypal line), then I had statements in my listing that I would ship with USPS, then when I started shipping some stuff with Canada Post I had to remove that verbage. It only takes 3 days of the software updating the listings in the background, but it's still a royal pain. I can force it to update quicker by syncing listings, but it takes lots of time.

Re: Since Aug 29, have you sold anything?

17 sales this month, on pace for about 135, down from the nearly 270 from last month at about the expected amount. The gross sale figures are the killer at the moment. On pace for about 40% or less of last months figures. It’s hurting.

eBay sales are awful, but its been this way a lot longer than August 29.  In fact 2025 has been the worst year I've ever had on the platform ( I go back to 1999). The overall economy isn't good right now and mainly because of one self absorbed man who is slowly destroying the western economic system. On a positive note, I'm in Alberta and because of a younger demographic of people with good paying jobs local marketplace is 🔥. Last Saturday I did $600 in sales, that's more than I'll make on eBay in a month.

How are you handling the certificate of origin for all these used goods?

I tried doing some test shipping labels with chitchats, but havent had any luck getting it to be error free.

Since May down over 50% eBay sales. Trying to pick up some of the losses via local online auctions and FBM but they are no where near going to cover the loss from .com.

Another part that doesn't get discussed is the algorithm on eBay. Unless you have something so incredibly rare or unique smaller sellers will have their listings buried and only those who really search the categories will find your stuff. And to top it off you have promoted listings and the like. Its just not for the smaller seller anymore.

Re: Since Aug 29, have you sold anything?

It will be next to impossible to sell used goods and send them into the USA with the new tariffs restrictions. The courier companies want sellers to upload spreadsheet information with numerous particulars, outlining UPC codes, country of origin etc. and for the used market with 1 of 1 goods, it just won't be feasible.

Re: Since Aug 29, have you sold anything?

If one were to use that logic, then no site is " for the smaller seller anymore."...In a nutshell, THAT depends on what one sells...

However on a more positive note, There is more to online selling than eBay!...

Re: Since Aug 29, have you sold anything?

Canada sales seem to be normal for me.  I shut down shipping to U.S. so taking a hit there, however I've recently added about 10 European countries to ship to for some of my listings, no sales there yet however it has only been a day.  The majority of my media items (CD's, vinyl, Cassettes, DVD's) do not have a country of manufacture populated, I'm starting to rectify that now but wondering if it's worth the effort as I anticipate it will take me around 80 hours to input.

Re: Since Aug 29, have you sold anything?

If you mean populate on the Ebay website, you can do it in one lump effort by selecting all your listings and going to Edit, Edit all Selected, Shipping, Shipping Policy etc. I can't remember the exact steps but they are the same when you want to adjust all your prices at one time or make some other mass adjustment to your listings.

Re: Since Aug 29, have you sold anything?

I don't disagree. The first 15 years on eBay was amazing. It was a great way to buy and sell collections. But the last decade (exception was Covid years for obvious reasons) has been a slow creep towards larger corporate type selling. I have no delusions about it.

Nope - just a few enquiries.

Re: Since Aug 29, have you sold anything?

Both Search and Best Match use current sales and recent listings as part of their algorythms.

So if you have closed down for a while, your listings go down in Search.

FWIW, while September is a slightly slow period for me every year, my US sales from eBay are way way down, while domestic and Europe are normal.  Meanwhile on my other specialized hobby site, US sales are very slightly up.

@thefruga-84

On pace for about 40% or less of last months figures.

Monthly comparisons are pretty useless.

How were your sales in August/September 2024? 2023? 2022?

Some things just don't sell in some months. Bathing suits in September. BBQs after Father's Day. School supplies in April.

@shoppergurl08

I'm starting to rectify that now but wondering if it's worth the effort

Do a few every day just before they relist.

Less tiring than trying to do dozens or hundreds all in one go.

Re: Since Aug 29, have you sold anything?

Yes that would be through the bulk edit tool, unfortunately it's cumbersome when you have more than one country of manufacture to enter.  I went through one box yesterday of around 120 CD's and had around 15 different countries of manufacture.  One potential time saver is to bulk edit 6K CD listings all to Canada as the manufacture (as I'd say over 50% were manufactured in Canada) and then go one by one through each CD to indivdually edit the ones that are non-Canadian.  It's still a daunting task as every single CD needs to be looked at, it's great for my eyesite as many require the use of a magnifying glass to read the small print.
