Since Aug 29, have you sold anything? I was on time away for a few days but back on now for a couple of days and nothing, no Canadian or US sales.
How about you?

I had one sale on August 31.
In September (thus far), I've had no sales.

I with a touch of sadness officially deleted all my listings and shut my store down today after 8 years. It cost me one month of premium subscription ($60) to do it but I'm cutting my losses. It was definitely mixed emotions but I believe for me it's time. I'm certainly not deleting my account as I probably will try to sell again sometime in the future but it's not a good environment currently. Lets see what the next round of CUSMA talks will bring. I'm not confident but I'm hoping for the best.

I've been trimming my store... I have stuff I can liquidate (to cut my losses and get something for it), and other stuff that's not profitable or has too high tariffs to return to the brick and mortar store.
You know I'm very angry, I've been especially angry with the strike because I feel small businesses are being held hostage by CUPW. I was angry about the tariffs but trying to find a way to adapt because it's the new normal, but there's nothing normal about Canada Post being on strike and I don't want to have to adapt to that.

I am going to turn off promoted listings as they are now offering so few impressions its not worth the extra cost and
Just wondering. Since you don't pay anything for Promoted Listings until they sell, why bother to turn them off?
No sale-> no cost.
I have found my PL sales are lower than my non-PL sales, but my Views on PL are higher. I believe PL is advertising only, bringing eyeballs to my Store, and then browsers find something else to buy.

I've got old stock with PL, but have not been putting PL on new stuff. I figure if some stuff is being promoted it will help get views in my store, and maybe they buy something they see in the store that's not PL.
One thing about having lots and lots of listings (1000 on this account, although on time away, 9000 on the other account), is if you can get someone in the store they might look at lots of different things.
One thing I do not like when I see a listing that interests me, is going to check out the sellers store and seeing not much for sale in it. It's kind of disappointing because if I'm interested in one item, perhaps they have more and I can combine shipping. I'm not one to buy a one off thing if it's for my collections, so I'm much less likely to buy if I only find one thing that interests me. Most people I buy from regularly have stores for me to browse and lots to choose from.

I believe in the past many prospective buyers would search a store in detail. Now with promoted listings being attached to your listings it risks them going elsewhere if they see something either at a lower price compared to yours or something else that peeks their interest. Not 100 % but it happens. Sadly many buyers now have VERY limited attention spans.

I have lots of things that are not in very big quantity, it's not like I'm selling something where there's 100-200 copies of it available on eBay and lots of competition. I make up my own stamp collections, sure other people have stamp collections for sale, and maybe a buyer will look at several before picking which one, but I feel fairly confident my items will still sell even if other PLs are appearing in my listing.
If I'm looking at a listing and seeing PLs and navigating through them, I'm usually just browsing anyway and want to look at lots of stuff, but not so likely I'll buy anything unless I see what I think is a good deal.

The majority of my sales (about 2/3) are in Canada. Canadian sales are holding steady, or even up a bit. More than one buyer has said that they are specifically looking for Canadian vendors.
I've sold several items to the US since August 29, which I've had to cancel. In each case, I explained to the buyer that the cancellation was the result of the chaos in international shipping due to the new tariff policies, and that I would let them know once the promised revisions to the eBay billing and shipping systems were online. All were understanding, and most said that they were still intereted in the items anyway.
So we'll see what happens once the new eBay system including the tariffs in the invoice comes online.

You can lose your account over cancelling sales. Why not block the US from the beginning? Then you wouldn't have disappoinated buyers.

Sorry for the late response to this, yes I still have US Shipping open, I just raised all my shipping prices to the States on day 1 of this nonsense and have been slowly fine tuning the listings to be more accurate for actual duty amount owed. Hasn’t made a huge difference though. We lost 90% of our US business regardless.
I've had a few US sales, but lost a lot of them for three reasons...
1. My item location is now Canada (it was USA before Aug 29 since I was able to ship with USPS and the de minimis)
2. My shipping prices to the US have doubled.
3. eBay is telling US buyers they will have to pay tariffs.

Nope. I put alll my listings on holiday, and I suspect I will just remove them. Pretty much all of my buyers are US buyers, and the duties and tarrifs on made in China stuff is shutting me down. Really to bad as I have been a something fun to do seller for over 20 years. Dang.

I thought ebay will strike you with defects for that.... If they don't, what reason do you use for cancellations?
As for my sales, I didn't do anything at first and saw the reduction in US sales and a slight uptick in Canadian sales since. Then I had 3 US buyers refusing to pay tariffs/duties and finally blocked the US sales. Since then (more than a week ago) I didn't have a single sale to US or Canada. Someone mentioned recently on here that if you block the US sales the algorithm will hide you from Canadians shopping on .com as well. That seems to be very true for me. At least I don't see why else my Canadian sales have tanked at the same time...

I'm betting Canadian sellers who have had to revise their handling time are being penalized big time when it comes to a steady stream of eyes on listings due to the ongoing strike. And the other penalty if they have stopped US shipping. Maybe even a 3rd for listing on dot ca?

We're slowly putting back all non duty/tariff items on .com and everything else on .ca with a message we ship worldwide. Here's to the supreme court finding such tariff's are illegal and some of this can sort itself back on track.
Is there a fast way to find out if the item will have no duty/tariff? A master list somewhere?
Buyers are asking and I've spent hours on researching my US, European and Canadian made items in several categories and still can't find definitive answers, there are always some kinds of "buts".

If you sign up to use Stallion Express, they have a duty calculator on the dashboard. You put in the HTS code, it will tell you what the code is for (so you can be sure you put the code in correctly), then you put how much the item is worth (it only takes it in CAD for right now), and you put what country it's made, and it will tell you the tariff rate and how much the tariffs are.
I realize using Stallion might not be practical, but if you get signed up for it you can use the duty calculator.

You can you Zonos Prepay app to calculate tariffs if any.Used it few times for items shipped to USA (before strike) and many times just to check out diffrents items I'm selling.
10-07-2025 09:57 PM
Thank you.
I really don't want more places where I have to register and I already tired of checking the items one by one. I was more curious how sellers figure out the whole categories and niches are duty/tariff free as I see often mentioned.
10-07-2025 10:31 PM
Unless your item has CUSMA certification. then as far as I know the only catagory that is duty/tariff free is "informational media" items like DVD's, CD's, Magazines, etc.

Actually, you are wrong. eBay has allowed cancellation of US sales over tariff issues. Canada Post strike aside, that is why eBay has disabled Canada Post mailings on its shipping service. Canada Post mailing labels will be reinstated once the new eBay international shipping system comes online.
Besides, I am not going to put a systemic block on US sales only to have to change it back once eBay's new system comes in.
I recently made a sale to the US of an item shipped by FedEx. The buyer knows they will have to pay the tariffs to FedEx upon delivery, and have agreed. I also have eBay's written assurance that if FedEx pulls a fast one and tries to bill me personally for the tariffs, I will have eBay's support.
