Warned a buyer about tariffs, but then they refused delivery over tariffs....

Had a US buyer make an offer on an item made in China. So I warned them about Tariffs that will be taxed and billed to them at the border in my counter offer that they accepted. Then they refused delivery over said tariffs being applied. There's no brokerage fee, it's strictly the tariff. So now what do I do? Do I wait for the shipment to get back to me or am I obligated to provide a full refund?

eBay needs to add some sort of warning or disclaimer for US buyers. The information including country of origin is there in my listings....

FWIW

EBay does not insist on refunds for Undeliverable shipments, which includes Refused shipments.

The buyer is still covered by the policies of their credit card of course.

It appears that you are right, thank you. Well then, I'll try to proceed that way for the next potential US buyers.

The international fee is kind of low (0.4% so far, as far as I can see), so it's kind of a non-issue. Thanks again.

Since I've started this thread I now ship DDP when possible. Sometimes a buyer will just prefer UPS to bill them at delivery and I warn them that it's the tariff charge + brokerage in that case. Hoping the International Ship Program helps in this regard, but I still have yet to receive the enrollment.

OMG tell me about it - over the past few months I have had to educate US customers on what a tariff is - so frustrating!  But I am glad to learn that if they refuse the parcel we will still get paid.  I have only had one refusal so far, and because they made a false claim (said it was not as pictured- but no evidence) ebay paid me out.

Then UPS contacted me asking if I wanted the item back and I said no - otherwise I would have had to pay shipping back to me.  Since it wasn't a particularily expensive item - I didn't bother.

Has nothing to do with Carney, these tariffs have been imposed on every country in the world - try and catch up...
